Everyday, while searching for graphic design inspiration, I get to find really interesting design projects that open my eyes to new perspectives. Too many times I would play with different color pallets because I was inspired by how the colors in a movie poster where giving value to the character.

Because of this, I decided to share with you what I find over here, especially because if I save them in bookmarks I would actually forget about them.

Malaria tells the story of Fabiano, a young Mercenary who is hired to kill Death. This short film combines Origami, Kirigami, Time lapse, nankin illustration, Comic Books and Western Cinema.

This project was created by Edson Oda. Malaria won the Grand Prize at Disposable Film Festival 2013 .

Creative advertising and fashion

Following the past advertising posts I thought of putting together something about fashion, more exactly, about those creative bunch of adverts that challenge your eyes. Ads that distance themselves from the cheapness of the hoard, from the overuse of sex appeal to give value to their products.

Creative advertising and fashion, plain and simple, campaigns that present clothing products with a focus on originality and visual flair. You know what I am talking about, ads that make you go bananas because you don’t get what is all about (Issey Miyake Pleats Please), so that you can go in a hysteric laughter after ten minutes (it may be just me) when you find out the idea behind it.

Enough with that, here we have 11 advertising campaigns that take advantage of their environment, the printed layout, and present their products attached to : humor, symbolic features and pure playfulness.

Development of a new online fashion retailer from naming and brand personality, look and feel to a unique launch communication. We awakened clothing of the first collection to fashion faces and made the clothes to the stars of the launch campaign. The fashion faces were created in New York by Bela Borsodi by folding clothes from yalook’s first collection to faces – the fashion faces. The garments were not cut or glued, just folded. The result: twelve individual fashion characters. These are focus of our campaign.

In the wilderness of the forests where giant bulldozers are tearing apart the woods there is a monkey that accidentally finds a shaving machine and decides to use it. Spontaneously disguised as a human being, he moves out to the city and starts a career.

Side Effects is a provocative thriller about Emily and Martin, a successful New York couple whose world unravels when a new drug prescribed by Emily’s psychiatrist – intended to treat anxiety – has unexpected side effects.
It is an interesting website just because of how it is structured. You do not see websites that promote movies with this much attention to detail, I love it!

X3 studio internship website design

Everyday we see websites that get our attention and automatically catalog them as beautiful. What makes them beautiful?
With that question in mind, I approached the X3 studio to find out a little bit about their internship website.

It is not everyday that you see an agency that dresses up to impress for their potential internship students, usually it is the other way around.
Vertical and horizontal scrolling, the animation in the background, the comic book style design, all of these made me want to know what is the story of this website.

What brought on the creation of the internship program? What is its purpose?
We started out from a real need, that of studying and educating the young market, since we believe in giving young people, a chance at learning and later obtaining a job in our company. At the same time, we wanted to share the knowledge and experience we’ve acquired during all these years.This is not the first attempt for such a program, some time ago we tried to teach classes at School of Fine Arts, but students showed little interest in learning. So this time we tried a different approach- let those who are interested come to us.
Last but not least, it is a really good exercise for ourselves, as a design team, to go back to the basics and also help designers develop teaching skills, something essential in the mentor- apprentice relationship.
At the same time, an internship is a good way of reaching many professionals in the domain and enhance our visibility among target audience.

What does this internship focus on? What is it that the future student can learn?
It is a web and graphic design internship, that includes both theoretical notions, essential for those who wish to pursue a design career, as well as practical aspects and lots of tips& tricks that you would not normally get in school because they are specific to the work place. The exact schedule, divided into weeks, is available on the site. The internship mentors are four X3 designers, each specialized in a different area (UX, art direction, identity, illustration, print and rich media etc) so the interns have the opportunity to acquire knowledge in all the above mentioned areas.

Who is your target audience?
Our target audience mainly consists of senior college years or recent graduates of design courses. It’s important that these people have the basic knowledge that we can build on.

Why did you decide on creating a site as the main touchpoint in order to promote the internship and not use a more traditional method: ads on sites or in design schools?
As a design studio, we specialize on interactive works. Furthermore, in this context it’s the most appropriate means of promotion- modern, with excellent exposure, and an easy to use form application system. However, we did not limit ourselves to the site, we did print ads that we then displayed in design schools, coffee shops or other places that our audience visits. This combination allowed us to play with the story we created- the printed ad would depict a scene that you would then recognize on the site as well.

When speaking about design, why did you use this approach for the site? What does it highlight? (We’ve noticed you use the comic book style design, even for the Facebook timeline ad.)
We chose this light approach first of all due to our audience. Moreover, it showcases our abilities as designers, it highlights our desire to create quality projects and experiment as much as possible. We have learned a great deal ourselves by designing this site.
Regarding the comic book style, the campaign follows the concept of the last recruiting campaign named “X3 needs superheroes”. This time, X3 is looking for sidekicks that will have to undergo studies and tests in order to prove themselves. The sidekick is a character in its own right, one that the interns could identify themselves with and wish to become.

From the UX perspective of the site, what does it highlight? Can we assume to learn something similar during this internship?
Even when talking about UX, it’s again a light, easy to use approach. And since it it a design internship, we focus on all the visual aspects rather than the technical, HTML5 and CSS.

A desert surrounded by stories, one car, three beauties and none other than Paul Walker. For that is the climate of Colcci advertising campaign Fall / Winter 2013.

Inspired by militarism and action movies, it is set in Mojave, California, and brings a team weight: Izabel Goulart, Erin Heatherton and Thairine Garci, beyond the star of Fast and Furious.
Sebastian Kim is responsible for capturing all the details, while the stylist was on account of Daniel Ueda.

Lung cancer is a fashion faux pas

Everyday there is a new website created, that gets published on some showcase/gallery website and still only 30% of us get to see it. With this in mind, I will try to present some inspiration from the webdesign environment every week. Websites that bring something new to the table, that present something with different eyes, or just some websites that kill you with the incredible user experience features.

That being said, here we have 7 websites that got my attention while surfing the web this week. I hope that you will try to have a closer look at them and maybe leave your thoughts in the comments section below. Enjoy and stay creative!

Nasa Prospect

NASA Prospect was created by a group of student designers at the University of South Dakota.
It is the interactive story of the planet prospectors, left behind by NASA to recover the golden objects of humankind scattered across the solar-system by a global disaster. This episode follows Nicolas and Ema, on a mission to find remnants of human music contained in the golden records. Travel with them as they explore new planets, overcome great odds, and make unexpected friends.

Nowy Teatr

Nowy Teatr is created by Krzysztof Warlikowski and a group of his regular collaborators. The Artist’s European renown stems partly from his very particular view of audience’s role in an artistic event.
The main goal, which the director always strives for, is communication, creating a meaningful dialogue with the audience. This dialogue can be based on an understanding or it can start with a provocation that changes the routine way of thinking.
Nowy Teatr seeks to expand the area of dialogue with the audience not confining itself to theater performances alone. It aims to be a place for a whole new artistic situation. An area free for artists and curators to create, a space defined by people full of ideas.

University of Coimbra

With over seven centuries of history, University of Coimbra has a remarkable material and immaterial heritage, and represents a fundamental piece on the european and world scientific cultural history.
It has interesting looking graphics and the interaction side keeps things interesting. It has a refreshing look then what you would see on other university websites,even if it presents the information from a history point of view.

Illy Coffee Surfing

Photographer Gabriele Galimberti and illy document little sips of happiness in the stories and coffee moments of people around the world.
What I found interesting about this website is the slideshow. It is unique, thrum the way you get to navigate, and lets the subjects tell the story.

Internship website X3 Studio

A three-month design internship organized by X3, an award winning design studio from Timisoara.
It is a really interesting way of presenting their offer. Regularly design studios would just post a link with demands and that is about it, but studio X3 did an incredible job with this website. It is nice to see the agency getting all dressed to impress the future designer and not the other way around.
