John Neumeier says of his choreography, that they “create movements that move.” This emotional approach, of transforming dance into a dream, characterizes the Hamburg Ballet. “Movements, that move” is therefore the central theme for the first image campaign of the company at all.
To Neumeier the themes most relevant were “Solitude”, “Passion”, “Courage” and “Jealousy”. Each dance position was photographed individually and arranged with other thematically relevant elements. Through mirror images and the incorporation of elaborate detail, the emotion is showcased in a caleidoscopic composition: In “Passion” the dancers seem to be moving gracefully through blazing flames, in “Courage”, crossed swords and stylized dragons emphasize their expressive body language. The images give an insight into the human subconscious, but also reveal the impressive abilities of the dancers. In this manner, the pictures reflect what the visitors of the Hamburg State Opera can experience live in every performance.
Do to lack of information on the subject, I had to “barrow” more detailed information from Suze Barrett
