We are Freckled is the photography project of Jonas Carmhagen, a limited edition coffee table book, that celebrates freckles and the people behind them.
Under the watchful eye of photographer Jonas Carmhagen, designer Niclas Gozzi, and writer Natalie Tell, the freckles project took shape.
In early December the book named We Are Freckled will be sent to press; a unique coffee table book of photography on the topic “freckles”, consisting of both pictures and texts.
What I find interesting about this project is how Jonas is trying to define the project. To find out the roots of his motivation and find an answer to “why freckles?”. The internal aspects, on how his father had freckles, yet he could pass for Snow White. And the external aspects, prompted by his commercial photography experience, where freckles are considered an imperfection, blasphemy!
In his Kickstarter presentation, Jonas describes the diversity of subjects:
“Among many, you will find the mother, daughter, model, waitress, father, son, lawyer, student, brother, sister, CEO, pensioner, businessman, cousin and grandparent. Many of these beautiful people have grown up hating their freckles, but later come to love them. I want to tell everyone — freckled or not — that you are beautiful precisely the way you are created, and to not bother spending time thinking otherwise. This project is a reminder of that.”
Yet, no matter how beautiful the subject models are, there are a couple of words that make this project even better:
“With these pictures, it is my wish to prove that simplicity and masterpieces as well as perfection and imperfection are not by necessity opposites of each other. ” said Jonas.
